Excavations at the Royal Bull’s Head Inn – Day 4 – October 16, 2014

It was another successful day at the Royal Bull’s Head Inn, assisted by year 10, 11 and 12 ancient history students from Toowoomba State High School, and their teacher and head of the Humanities Department Anne Reilly. We continued work on Square C and Square D, which both show promising signs of containing interesting features. We also started drawing in the features of Square B today, containing the large paved/cobbled path. Along with photography, drawing the feature gives us yet another form of documentation which allows us to more fully characterize it.

Among the noteworthy items we uncovered today was a steel axe, shown here, being excavated by archaeology honours student Alyssa Madden.

Tomorrow, Kelsey Lowe (University of Queensland) and Aaron Fogel (Griffith University) will be continuing their geophys work, on the hillside behind the inn. The results of this survey will be very interesting, as it is thought there may be burials on that slope, as the inn predates the Drayton cemetery. Time will tell.
